NEW! Bontrager Aeolus XXX & Aeolus Pro 5 Wheels

Joe Richardson

Wheelie Big News!

We all know that one of the biggest changes you can make to the quality of your bike and riding is to upgrade your wheels and one thing that we've seen over the last few years is that Bontrager wheels have been flying out the shop. Offering high end performance, reliability and quality at a price that is wallet friendly, Bontrager wheels have a lot to offer!

With all this in mind, we're pleased to introduce the new Bontrager XXX and Aeolus Pro 5 Wheelsets! Building on the success of the Aeolus D3 range, the updated lineup have redesigned shapes that allow riders to run a deeper wheel with confidence in all conditions, including in strong crosswinds and in the wet. They also offer better aerodynamic performance, better braking and better stability for road, gravel and cyclocross riding.

This hasn't all come about by chance though. Bontrager have tested over 10,000 rim shapes to find the three depths that will lead the industry in speed, stability and weight whilst building on the amazing feel and quality of ride that riders have come to expect from Aeolus.

Three; The Magic Number

There are 3 variations of the new XXX range. The Aeolus XXX 2 features a rim depth of 28mm and is the lightweight climber that comes in at 1350g in a rim brake version and 1380g in disc. It's also strong enough for CX and gravel riding. The Aeolus  XXX 4 (1400g in rim brake and 1455g in disc) has a rim depth of 47mm to give a do-it-all workhorse performance as well as being the most versatile option for everyday aero performance, whilst the XXX 6 ( 1530g in both rim and disc brake versions) utilises a 60mm depth for speed with unmatched stability, bringing an ultra aero wheel to more riders and conditions.

The Devils In The Details

All of the new Aeolus XXX wheels are designed and manufactured at Trek's global HQ in Waterloo, WI and feature all new shapes which are optimised for each depth and intended use. This results in the classic Aeolus ride quality with best-in-class aerodynamics and stability. Braking performance has always been an issue with carbon rims when ridden in wet conditions. Well, Bontrager have been working on that and developed a Laser Control braking track that out performs that of alloy rims, even in wet conditions.

One of the most popular features on Bontrager wheels is that they can be set up and run tubeless and the new XXX wheels are no different there. They also come with a wider 21mm internal rim width that provides great support for the wider tyres that are becoming more and more popular. One of the other popular features has been the DT Swiss hubs. They're reliable, easily serviced and roll beautifully. The new XXX wheels come with DT Swiss hubs with 36-point star ratchets laced with DT-Swiss Aerolite spokes.

All depths are available in clincher and tubular versions for both rim and disc brakes. On top of that they will be available on Project One builds from early April!

All New Aeolus Pro 5

In addition to Aeolus XXX wheels, the Aeolus family welcomes the addition of a new rim depth. The all-new Aeolus Pro 5 is a 50mm deep tubeless-ready wheel that perfectly balances durability, weight, and aerodynamics and is available in both rim and disc brake models.

Through an aggressive price point, the Aeolus Pro promises to bring the performance and ride feel of carbon wheels to more riders.
