Bontrager Velocis Waterproof Winter Glove

As I’m writing this, the snow has finally subsided enough to make riding on the road, not a completely daft idea. If you’re in York or the surrounding areas, you might think, ‘Huh? Snow?’ In West Yorkshire, particularly near Bradford, there’s been a small dusting of thewhite stuff, making the turbo trainer the more sensible option for those on skinny wheels.

So I’ve been sensible, and instead of riding at all I’ve been enjoying walking the dog and even attempted a run – I know, not sensible. But today is the day I’ve been back out on my bike, and I put the Bontrager Velocis Waterproof Winter Gloves to good use.

I’ve been using them when the weather calls for it (which is quite often around here) for a few months after I arrived at Cycleworks in January with rather pink digits after forgetting my gloves. As someone who has quite small hands, I do find it quite difficult to find gloves that aren’t too baggy or winter ones that aren’t like wearing welding gloves.

I like a certain amount of dexterity when I’m riding, so I picked out these winter offerings from Bontrager to try. They are quite padded, granted, but they come with an internal liner that stops at the fingertips, so you don’t immediately get sweaty once you’ve warmed up. Furthermore, they are rather heat efficient, so I only found that I needed them in temperatures below 5°C.

They’re also really nicely cushioned, but without being overly bulky. I tried a size S and found the fingers were only ever so slightly too long, but the overall fit was nice and snug. What attracted me most to these gloves is the combination of waterproofing (thanks to the softshell outer fabric) and the warm, Thinsulate material inside to keep you warm.

It’s rated as a medium warmth by Thinsulate, but anything more and I don’t think you’d find them appropriate for the weather in Britain. The thumb and index finger also have touchscreen compatibility – perfect for when you want to stop and take a picture for Instagram.

These are more of a deep winter glove than anything you’ll wear year-round. But when thesnow comes calling and the rain is on its way, and I can see my breath, I won’t be wearing anything else.

You can buy the Bontrager Velocis Waterproof Winter Gloves from York Cycleworks for £49.99, but if you’re not sure whether they’ll fit or what sort of gloves you’d benefit from, pop into the shop and get kitted out.
